Trauma-informed Legal Representation: Tips on Interviewing Traumatised Witnesses from Lawyer Turned Psychotherapist, Anjali Bonner Hughes


In the next two videos in our series on trauma-informed legal representation, Associate Kelsey Murrell is joined by psychotherapist Anjali Bonner Hughes. Anjali formerly practiced as a corporate lawyer in New York before re-training as a psychotherapist in the UK. Anjali is particularly experienced in supporting lawyers both by advising them on best practices when working with traumatised clients or witnesses and by providing counselling services to legal professionals. In part 1, Anjali provides a basic overview of the areas of the brain and how they are affected by trauma.

In part 2, Anjali and Kelsey discuss:

  • How trauma affects memory and how this might impact evidence-gathering
     
  • Top tips for putting a client who has experienced trauma at ease including, to always start with kindness and empathy and to encourage your client to provide evidence in multiple ways to aid with memory recall
     
  • The importance of understanding how trauma may manifest (such as flight, fight, freezing or fawning responses, for example) to avoid making assumptions
